Chapter Twelve
LUCAS
It was all Zoeâs fault.
There was no way I could read a single page of my book before turning off the lights. I lay on my side of the bed with my Kindle open, frustrated. After rereading the same page four times, I still had no clue what the scene was about, or who was in it. I could have been reading a story with unicorns and mermaids, for all I knew.
Zoe was finishing her nightly routine in the bathroom, humming âEverything I Do, I Do it For Youâ by Bryan Adams while she brushed her teeth.
It made me smile.
Just about everything she did today had made me smile.
That was the problem; I just couldnât stop thinking about her.
Now that the ice had finally melted around her heart, the original Zoe was shining like the brightest star. Feisty, funny, independent, wickedly smart, and so lovely that she made my heart practically slam against my chest every time she smiled. It didnât look like things were going to get any easier as she walked out of the bathroom looking ridiculously cute in those baby-blue pajamas of hers.
âWhat?â she said, when she noticed me watching her.
âNothing,â I lied, trying to pull my eyes off her, but failing miserably.
Zoe nodded her head knowingly. âUh-huh . . .â
She placed a few things in the dresser, then walked over to her side of the bed, hesitating, eyeing the pillows in the middle, the Great Wall of China that separated our bodies while we slept.
What was she thinking?
And why did she smell so good?
Zoe leaned across the bed and started removing the pillows one-by-one, stacking them on the reading chair near the window. I had this feeling it was her way of saying she was done playing games. As if those pillows were a metaphor for the walls that were keeping us from being friends. Was she declaring a truce?
My mouth fell open.
Zoe got in bed like it was no big deal.
She didnât even mention it.
I wished I knew what she expected me to do. One wrong move could cause the biggest mistake of my life. My brain was experiencing a malfunction, and my heart was about to pop out of my chest. The best option was probably to let her lead and act cool. I leaned over to set my Kindle on the nightstand, then rolled onto my side to face her.
She was quiet, staring at the ceiling.
âWhat are you thinking, Miss Zoe Leilani Bell?â I innocently asked.
âYou donât want to know,â she said, staring at the ceiling.
She was dead wrong.
I wanted to know everything.
Was she thinking about us? My mind raced with possibilities, each one more tantalizing than the last. There was just something about her that had me completely captivated.
My thoughts kept drifting back to that game sheâd been playing with me at dinner, which, for me, really wasnât a game at all. The way she had responded to my touch had sent shivers racing down my spine. I couldn't help but feel the urge to touch her again.
